Monday's (and Tuesday's!) Advice For World Happiness: See More Art!

Monday, Monday! TUESDAY! My most favorite day of the week to dish out Advice, if for no other reason than this is the one day people's ears are guaranteed to perk up to any advice that might just allow them to one day escape their desks!

Today's advice is short and sweet: GO SEE MORE ART -- NOW!

Living here in NYC you'd think that would be a no-brainer for Madams such as myself, but believe it or not, I don't nearly see enough Art outside of my own bevy of books on the subject -- and my guess is, neither do you! Even when I do make it out with the intention to visit one of the many museums & galleries littering Gotham, generally I only make it to one of my Favorite 4: The Met, MOMA, The Guggenheim and The Frick. This because, given the fact that I am not an Art Historian, I simply can never just make up my mind as to how to approach the gallery scene! NYC is plum full of galleries -- concentrated in Midtown, SOHO and Chelsea -- just a glance into the Gallery Events in Time Out makes me freeze in indecision. I mean, I am a Performing Artist by trade, so I love to see nearly any kind of Art. Feeling overwhelmed, I often choose to stick to a Museum or peruse books from the comfort of my own Chaise.

But as Fate would have it, I recently found myself invited last minute to an opening at The Emmanuel Fremin Gallery in Soho, owned by its namesake, Emmanuel Fremin. Celebrating its recent move into a fresh penthouse loft, the gathering brought not only a diversity of guests, but a wide range of Artists as well. Hailing from Poland to Tunisia, these Emerging Artists represented a world of mediums including Painting, Collage, Photo-Surrealism and Light. Early on I was reminded me of the difference between Gallery Viewing and Museum Viewing: Museum Viewing is a wonderful place to observe grand ideas from the past; Gallery Viewing is to very much fast-forward oneself into the Future.

Of particular interest to me at this night's showing were the Photo-Surrealism of Thomas Barbey. Highly imaginative, his photo-collages urge you to follow The White Rabbit into the Neverland of your dreams. Merging fantastical occurrences amidst reality, Mr. Barber succeeds in uniting the historical world of Surrealist Painting to the ever-evolving medium of photography -- with alarmingly visceral results. As soon as I collect enough donations here on MBLNYB (HINT!), I will be purchasing one of his works.

My other fave of the evening was the work of my friend and colleague, Kilu Horecki. Yes, he is my friend, so yes, I am biased. However, it can not be ignored that Kilu's work can not be separated from his person, so if I thought his work dull, well, our friendship would have never taken off.

Kilu's choice for the evening was to offer a captivating view of his most recent muse, Light. Harnessing the emotional quality of the substance that serves as our constant companion during dark hours, it becomes apparent through Kilu's creative installation and photography, that this substance, often take for granted, and rarely appreciated on its own accord, has a surprising ability to move one into silence as we are spellbound by its presence.

Concluding my evening browsing through the remaining Artist's work (with special lingering over Drew Tal's pieces) and chatting with Gallery goers young and 'experienced', one could not help but to feel energized! Arriving at the event cold as the dickens, I not only walked away from the event warmer, but also inspired to get my own ideas underway. After all, why not?! With the daily toil of life increasing mightily, a stroll through the world of imagination truly is what the Doctor ordered. And if you've got any sense about you, you'd be wise to head there now, too.
