THE FILM: DREAM ON DREAMER |

M  R
 Documenting The American Dream

DREAM ON DREAMER is an idea born of Imani’s unusual path to ballet, one taking place at an age FAR FAR above the norm. Initially her unusual path into dance caught the eye of a local filmmaker in Havana, who understood that her work became a unique backdrop to explore important social issues.

Since its beginning the idea for the film has grown and seeks to take a bird’s eye view of the “American Dream” as juxtaposed against the growing inequalities of the commercial culture.  through exploring a cast of individuals who are fighting the odds to achieve their potential.

Focused through the lens of Imani’s journey from a childhood being removed from her family and placed into the social service system of orphanage / foster care,  to her current training seriously in professional dance and ballet as an adult, the film will look more closely at the process of self actualization for those where family circumstances present serious barriers to achievement — in an attempt to separate the reality from the hype of what it means to achieve success.

DREAM ON DREAMER also seeks to look at the particular role the arts play to the economic and societal health of any nation, including understanding arts practice as a unique tool for overcoming trauma and fighting underachievement.

As such the film will take a critical look at important topics of income and opportunity inequality, ageism, commercialism, capitalism, the arts and arts funding.

A particular focus of the film is to bring awareness to barriers faced by those who have experienced personal / family trauma and financial constraint, both inside and outside of the social service system — and the long term, and often ignored affects of such.

The arch of the film seeks to illustrate the power of the arts beyond mere entertainment, and its important and often overlooked role in personal, societal and economic development and success.

This film is currently in its pre-production stages and intends to be shooting over the course of a 2 - 3 year period in New York City, Havana, Cuba and St. Petersburg, Russia.
