Summer has arrived and it's my birthday month!  As such I'm always looking for fun July events and I can't really think of a more exciting one than the 5 Year Anniversary Performances of The Latin Choreographer's Festival,  the brainchild of NYC Resident Ballerina and Choreographer Ursula Verduzco.

Having attended the Festival over past few years, this year proves to be chock full of reasons to get to the theatre -- the least being that this year's 5th Anniversary Festival is dedicated to the late Mexican Choreographer Jose Limon, whose work was not only on the frontier of Modern Dance, but whose wonderful ballet, The Moor's Pavane, provided my very own debut in the title role of Desdemona many-a-moons ago!  Wow, does this bring back memories.  I can't wait for the Opening Night guest performance of Limon Dance Company member Daniel Fetecua!  In addition, to further celebrate their 5th year running, the 2012 Festival has expanded to feature 2 distinct programs featuring over 19 Choreographers!

As Ursula so wonderfully remarks of her journey:  "This festival began on a shoestring and has been an incredible 5 years of work, growth and transformation. It has not always been easy....it is a challenge to create something out of nothing and push beyond what is expected.  It makes me increasingly happy to receive the response we have and to be able to say we are on the right path to a bright future."

In terms of programming Ursula expounds that "this year is a landmark for us -- our 5th Anniversary!  We are not only bringing back some of our memorable past participants but we are also bringing more new Choreographers than ever, as well as inviting 5 Non-Latin Choreographers this year to unite in our mission with our common language of dance.  We have also been fortunate to involve the Jose Limon Dance Company to celebrate and honor Mexican Born Jose Limon's incredible contribution to American Modern Dance and will be hosting a special Film to start off the program each night,  as well as featuring the guest performance of Limon company dancer Daniel Fetecua for our Opening Night.  This really is a remarkable season for the Festival!"

With that said, it looks we will have plenty to feast our eyes upon and I know I am excited here at Madame B.!
